Literary Figures

The novel “Fahrenheit 451” has many literary figures that are certainly exposed to be used  as a tool to understand the  situations that are given, as some of the examples in the novel can be compared to some items that might be familiar to the reader. Some of the literary devices are:

"Kerosene," he said, because the silence had lengthened, "is nothing but perfume to me."

This quote is a clear example of a metaphor having mind that kerosene won't smell as good as a perfume to a regular person,  but as the fireman was always surrounded by this substance and fire, he recognized  this smell as something  good that made him think about his job. This kind of literary device have a big effect on the reader taking into account that metaphors are used to compare  two different objects, ideas, thoughts, or feelings so the reader will have a clearer idea about the physical description in this case the writer is giving it as a clue to show that an item is figuratively compared to something else.

"as he stood there the sky over the house screamed."

Taking into account that  an
alliteration is a grammatical term meaning two or more words in a row starting with the same sounds. It can be seen in this part of the novel that the alliteration is present as the author uses words that sound similar and in some way unusual in the moment that you read the whole sentence you realize how funny it sounds, and it makes you as a  reader keep constantly entertained.

"He wore his happiness like a mask..."

This is a perfect example of  a simile having in mind that a simile is a figure of speech that makes a comparison, showing similarities between two different things. In this case the writer uses a simile to show how the main character of the book was always pretending to be happy but as if he was always wearing a mask that wouldn't let him show how he really feels. This helps me as a reader understand better the topic that is being talked about by showing the character's feelings to his personal experiences.

"It fed in silence with an occasional sound of inner suffocation and blind searching."

As the paradox is a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality, it expresses a possible truth. It is shown the way that is absolutely impossible that someone make in silence sound and also the illogical fact  of searching for something while a person can't look. Which makes me as a reader think about the examples present in the novel and how the contradiction or antonyms make the people understand better.

"I sometimes think drivers don't know what grass is, or flowers, because they never see them slowly," she said.

Taking into account that irony is the use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning . This quote is a simple example, having in mind that Clarisse died by getting hit by a car so it's ironic that she talks about car's speed while she died because of this. Also it can be seen how this example helps the reader realize how some conclusions and results about some characters  in the novel are affected by the opposite situation.
